Composting and Outdoor learning support for schools Composting is a fantastic learning resource which can support many curriculum areas and provide hands-on learning opportunities for pupils of all ages. It is also an essential life-skill and can save the school money in bin costs and buying in compost for the garden. Devon Community Composting Network offers to help primary and secondary schools in Devon and Torbay set up and maintain composting systems, use compost as a learning resource, plan your outdoor space for growing and help link to the curriculum. This used to be funded through the local authority but now the funding is not there sadly. Look at our sister project www.growingdevonschools.org for more information:
- Advice on how to set up a composting system at your school – see the step-by-step guide and Composting in School: a practical guide handbook to find out what this might include.
- Organise a waste audit – to find out how much waste your school produces, including food waste. This is a fantastic hands on activity to get the whole school thinking about what happens to their waste.
- Compost health checks – check how your existing composting system is doing, including repairing equipment and advising on the composting process.
- Help with funding – help you to apply for funding, to set up or upgrade your composting system. It might be best to contact us through www.growingdevonschools.org
- Training – train teachers, caretakers and pupils in using the composting system.
- Compost assemblies and workshops – to raise the profile of composting in your school and introduce ways of learning about compost in the curriculum.
- Skills share visits – coordinate a skills share visit to a nearby composting school so you can see how their system works and meet a composting mentor.
